MELROSE — The Melrose High Red Raider hockey team earned a much-needed win on Monday evening at the Kasabuski Arena in Saugus when they beat visiting Medford High, 3-1.

It was their third overall victory this season for Melrose, now wrapping up what’s proved to be a rebuilding season. But a win is a win for coach Vin Mirasolo’s squad, who close out the season this week with games against two tough squads in Chelmsford (14-4-2) and Austin Prep (12-4-3) on Wednesday and Thursday (post deadline).

At the net Matt Bowers limited the Mustangs to just one goal. Melrose got on the board first thanks to a goal by Shane Correale on assists from Shea Champagne and Darwin Anderson. Medford tied it up at 1-1 on a shorthanded goal, after forcing a Melrose turnover. But Melrose earned the edge again with their second goal courtesy of Steve “Boo” Guttadauro from an assist by Zack Phipps.

Melrose took a decisive 3-1 lead when Jack Wells scored a goal from an assist by Alex Burton. That would be all Melrose would need to skate off to a 3-1 victory over the Mustangs.
