NORTH READING — Playing in the tough Cape Ann League meant that, despite reaching the MIAA Division 3 quarterfinals before losing to Wayland, no North Reading High girls’ tennis player made the CAL All-Star team.

“Unlike other sports, only so many players make the team,” explained North Reading head coach Matt Tiberii.

North Reading went 12-11 overall winning two playoff matches over Boston Latin Academy and Belchertown. In the CAL, they came in third place in the Kinney division going 7-6.

Althea Bradley went 11-11 at first singles this spring.

“She is only a sophomore and she played better as the year went along,” said Tiberii.

Her older sister, Alyssa went 9-11 at second singles.

“This was her first year playing singles,” pointed out Tiberi, about the senior. “She stepped up well.”

Vanessa Wright was 10-6 at third singles.

“She was solid all year,” said Tiberi. “She will be moving up next year when she will be a senior.”

The first doubles team of senior captains, Chloe Florez and Katherine Hoadley, finished at 13-3.

“They only take two doubles teams for the All-Stars,” said Tiberii, about why they were not selected for the All-Star team. “I was very happy with the way those two played this year.”

Mary Bonzagni and Bhagi Bandara ended up at 4-9 at second doubles.

“They were a new pairing this year,” said Tiberii, as Bonzagni is a senior while Bandara is a junior. “The league has a lot of depth at second doubles this season.”

To show how strong the CAL was this year, Newburyport won the Division 3 state title while Hamilton-Wenham defeated Manchester-Essex in the Division 4 championship match on Sunday. Lynnfield, meanwhile, lost to Manchester-Essex in the Div. 4 state semifinals.

“Besides the Dual County League, our league is the best one in the state,” proclaimed Tiberii.
