A woman with many interests

 

NORTH READING — Rita M. Callan, 88, formerly of North Reading and Wakefield, died Saturday, Sept. 27, after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 6, 1926 in Taunton, daughter of the late Edward C. and Frances M. Callan.

Rita was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1943 and The Wilson School in Boston. She worked at Boston Children’s Hospital for 32 years in the Department of Allergy and Immunology. She not only traveled extensively in connection with her employment but also enjoyed traveling in this country and abroad with family and friends.

Rita had many talents and interests and was passionate about needlepoint, glass collecting and art. She was a member of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem for many years.

Rita is survived by her sister Ann Dorlay of Sylvania, Ohio; her two brothers, John M. Callan and his wife Gail of Centerville and Robert D. Callan and his wife Jacqueline of Dover, N.H., as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, M. Frances Reinhalter and Claire C. Carlson and two brothers, Thomas G. and Edward C. Callan.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There will be no calling hours.
