WAKEFIELD — Samantha Lyn Keegan, 26, passed away on October 17, 2018 of an accidental overdose after a long, brave battle with addiction.

Born in Winchester on June 27, 1992, she was the daughter of Thomas E. Keegan and Kathleen J. (Graham) Keegan, both of Wakefield.

Samantha was a graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Class of 2010.

In addition to her parents, Samantha is survived by her two sisters; Brittany Keegan of Rhode Island and Elizabeth, formerly Jeremy, Keegan of Wakefield; and her two grandmothers Carolyn Graham of Wakefield and Elizabeth Keegan of Melrose. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Samantha was predeceased by her two grandfathers; Michael Graham and George Keegan.

Samantha will not be defined by her addiction. Anyone that knew her remembers her as a shy, funny, intelligent, beautiful young woman with a bright, captivating smile. She loved music, dancing and her family and friends very deeply. Addiction is not something to be covered up and be embarrassed about. Sam fell into the grips of addiction and it could have happened to anyone. It was not her choice. Sam was kind and loving and would do anything for anyone.

She was soft-spoken and cared about everyone. She had a light inside of her that was felt by everyone around her even though she struggled. Addiction does not discriminate. It will take hold and destroy anyone in its path, including the families and people who love them. Samantha isn’t just another statistic. She had a huge heart and a bright future, and was a gift from God that the world lost and can never replace. Please honor Samantha’s life if you knew her or read this by thinking twice before you judge someone struggling with addiction or mental illness, and if you are struggling, ask someone for help, because people care and want to help.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m.
