LYNNFIELD — The Select Board is accepting nominations for the Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence.

The Townsend Award, which was first proposed by former Select Board member Chris Barrett, was created in 2017. The award is named after Daniel Townsend, who perished on April 19, 1775 in the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

“This is given annually by the Select Board to an individual or individuals for their exemplary dedication and commitment to the town,” said Select Board Chair Dick Dalton. “The Select Board will select and honor each year one or more individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the area of volunteerism. We are going to be taking nominations from the community. We will close out nominations on Oct. 31.”

Dalton said the Select Board intends to present the Townsend Award during Fall Town Meeting. Residents can email nominations to Assistant Town Administrator Bob Curtin at rcurtin@town.lynnfield.ma.us or mail them to the Town Administrator’s Office, 55 Summer St., Lynnfield MA 01940.

Late Planning Board/Conservation Commission member Donald Harriss and late Zoning Board of Appeals Chair John Smith were the recipients of the 2023 Townsend Award. Former Selectman/Town Moderator/Fields Committee Chair Arthur Bourque, late Selectman Al Merritt, retired Town Administrator/Selectman/Town Moderator H. Joseph Maney, former Selectman David Drislane, former Council on Aging Board of Directors Chair Fred Santangelo, retired Conservation Administrator Betty Adelson, late Selectman Dr. Robert Weiss and longtime volunteer Ellen Crawford have previously received the Townsend Award.
