WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Townies split its last two games in the Middlesex Senior Babe Ruth League as it won a game the easy way last night by accepting a forfeit from Winchester after being trimmed by the Arlington Cardinals by a 5-3 score on Wednesday night at Spy Pond.

The Townies fought hard against the Cardinals but ran into some strong pitching. The loss to Arlington dropped the Townies’ record to 9-8 at the time with five games remaining on the 22 game schedule.

Wakefield’s Adam Chanley was on the hill Wednesday. The big righty hurled seven innings allowing only four hits. However unearned runs did him in with the big inning coming for Arlington in the second when the Townies allowed four runs on two hits, two walks and two errors. Chanley recorded two of his five strikeouts in the second inning.

Arlington added a run in the fourth to cap off their scoring.

Wakefield got on the board in the third after leaving runners on in the first and going in order in the second.

The Townies’ third started with Max Marchino reaching on an error. He was moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Murray. After a ground out made it two outs in the inning, Arlington’s pitcher lost command of his pitches. Four straight walks followed, with two runs coming in to score.

It was 4-2 at that point and, after Arlington scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Townies came back and scored a run in the fifth to make it 5-3. A leadoff walk to Zach Thomas was followed by a strikeout and a ground out. It was Chanley who came through to help himself with a two out RBI triple.

Wakefield went in order in the sixth and seventh innings to quickly bring the game to an end.

The Townies were due to be back in action the next night, with a home game against Winchester on the schedule for Thursday at Walsh Field.

The 5:45 p.m. game was delayed and eventually called a forfeit as Winchester was unable to field a team of nine players. The Townies won the game by a 7-0 score.

The forfeit brings the Townies record to 10-8 with four games remaining. Their next game is scheduled to be Friday at 5:45 p.m. at Walsh Field against Revere. The Townies then play Reading at Morton Field on Sunday night at 5:30 p.m.
