Prevail 6-1 over Pond Rats

 

WAKEFIELD — Pitching and timely hitting propelled the Middlesex Senior Babe Ruth Townies to their third win in four tries with a 6-1 victory over the Arlington Pond Rats on Monday night at Walsh Field.

Wakefield was unable to keep up its winning ways last night as it was blanked by Cambridge by a 2-0 score at St. Peter’s Field. The Townies dropped to 3-2 on the season with last night’s setback.

On Monday at Walsh Field, Max Marchino had his second quality start of the year pitching six innings allowing one run on two hits while walking three and striking out three.

Adam Chanley pitched the seventh inning and struck out the side.

Offensively, Anthony Cecere, John Evangelista and Tighe Beck had two hits each. Chanley had a single and two RBIs and Chris Dettorre had a hit and three RBIs.

Wakefield started the scoring early with three runs in the first. Zach Thomas walked and Cecere and Evangelista singled to load the bases. Marchino hit a sacrifice fly scoring Thomas and Chanley singled scoring Cecere and Evangelista.

Wakefield didn’t score again until the fourth. Beck led off with a double. Kevin Murray singled putting runners at first and third. Matt Smith walked to load the bases and Chris Dettorre followed with a fielder’s choice scoring Beck.

In the sixth, Wakefield scored two more. Brett Maloney walked and Beck singled. A wild pitch put runners on second and third. Murray grounded into a fielder’s choice with Maloney getting thrown out at the plate. After Murray stole second, Dettorre singled scoring Beck and Murray to complete Wakefield’s scoring.

Arlington’s only run came in the fourth as they got its only two hits to lead off the inning and scored on a double steal.

Wakefield’s next home game is Friday night at 5:45 p.m. at Walsh Field vs. Woburn.
