WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High softball team inched closer to its goal of making the state tournament this past weekend by splitting a pair of makeup games.

On Saturday morning the Warriors lost to Lexington 9-4 at Vet’s Field, but rebounded with a decisive 18-6 triumph over Northeast Metro Tech on Sunday in a non-league game at Vets’ Field.

Wakefield is now 9-9 overall and needs to win out of its two remaining games to get into the postseason.

Wakefield coach Rick “Coach Q.” Quattrocchi, not one to make excuses, wasn’t doing so by blaming the poor showing on the previous evening’s junior prom.

“We didn’t play well. It was a very winnable game but we didn’t get it done,” said the coach.

The team stormed back on Sunday to beat the Knights by a 16-6 score in mercy-rule shortened six inning contest to sweep it the season series. Wakefield crushed Northeast by a 17-1 tally on April 17.

Emma Hickey and Alexi Truesdale had three RBIs apiece and Vanessa Kaddaras scored four runs. Julia Purcell, Meagan Gibbons and Julia Guanci all had a pair of RBIs, while Vanessa Kaddaras, Nicole Catino, and Mia Romano each chipped in an RBI.

Hickey and Kaddaras both had three hits apiece, while Purcell, Truesdale, Juliette Guanci, and Katie Pearl had two hits each.

This week the team needs a win in either of their final two games against Billerica or Marblehead to return to the postseason. “Coach Q.” acknowledges that it will be a fight.

“The Billerica girl dominated us last time and my scouts tell me that despite their record, Marblehead is tough,” said Quattrocchi.

Wakefield hosts Billerica this afternoon at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, at Vets’ Field. The contest has been moved up from a 6 p.m. start in the hope that the Warriors will get in the game before it rains tonight.

The Warriors then wrap up the season tomorrow afternoon at 3:45 p.m. against Marblehead at Vets’ Field.
