NORTH READING — On Monday afternoon, the North Reading High volleyball team got its first win of the year as they shut out guest Triton, 3–0, to go to 1–3 overall and in the Cape Ann League. The Hornets won game one, 25–16, game two 28-25 and game three, 25–11.

“We went on a scoring run early in that third game and that took the wind out of their sails after that close second game,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone.

Ciera Mastascusa led the way as the senior co-captain had 14 service points, nine kills and seven digs. She also had seven service aces. She led the team in all of those categories.

“She had a great day,” said Milone.

Milone was also able to get his bench some valuable playing time as well.

“It was a real total team effort,” said Milone.

The Hornets were missing Nicole Sullivan this game as she injured her hip in practice last Thursday and Milone does not know when she will be back.

On Sept. 15, the Hornets were shut out, 3–0, by guest Hamilton-Wenham. The Generals won the first game,25–16, the second game, 25–19 and the final game, 25–13.

“We didn’t play well,” admitted Milone. “Hamilton–Wenham had a good team and we let them run away from us.”

Mastascusa had 15 service points, eight digs and three kills with four service aces. Fellow senior, Jess Lezon, led the Hornets in kills with six.

On Sept. 25, the Hornets visit CAL newcomer Georgetown at 5:30 p.m. North Reading then hosts Peabody at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 in a non–league match.
