WAKEFIELD — A 27-year-old Stoneham man was arrested late last night on multiple drug charges as well as for driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police said that Officer Megan Roberto was on patrol in her cruiser on Water Street at about 10:45 p.m. when she saw a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta facing the wrong direction at the end of Rosemary Avenue with the car alarm going off and the lights flashing. Officer Roberto then saw the car go from one side of the road to the other and park.

When Roberto approached the driver, identified as Derek Bambery of 12 Whipple Ave. in Stoneham, he was outside the car with the trunk and the windows open. According to police, Officer Roberto observed the Bambery place something in the trunk. When asked what he was doing, the man said that he was dropping a friend off, but could not say who the friend was or where he lived, police said.

When another officer arrived, he offered to retrieve the car registration from the glove box and was given permission to do so by Bambery. When he opened the glove box, the officer saw a quantity of rocks believed to be crack cocaine and Bambery was placed under arrest.

When the car was inventoried later at police headquarters, they also found a number of other drugs, including Suboxone, Adderall, Clonazapam and marijuana. Bambery faces charges for the drugs as well as for driving an unregistered vehicle.
