LYNNFIELD — Results from the 2015 MCAS exams taken by students across the state last week by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) last week and Lynnfield students continue to score higher than the state average.
Superintendent of Schools Jane Tremblay said she was pleased with the school system’s MCAS results in an e-mail with the Villager.
“The MCAS scores are consistent throughout the district with some nice improvements in the middle school,” said Tremblay. “I am looking forward to hearing the analysis of each level at the School Committee meeting next week.”
Grade 10
In grade 10, where passing the tests is a requirement for a student to receive a high school diploma, 81 percent of sophomores were advanced on the English exam, 17 percent were proficient, 1 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed. By comparison, in 2014, 73 percent were advanced, 24 percent were proficient, 3 percent needed improvement and none failed.
The data also revealed 69 percent of sophomores were advanced on the MCAS math exam, 26 percent were proficient, 4 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed. In 2014, 66 percent were advanced, 23 percent were proficient, 11 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed.
The results revealed 49 percent of freshmen received advanced scores on the MCAS science exam, while 45 percent were proficient, 5 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed. In 2014, 42 percent of freshmen were advanced, 48 percent were proficient, 10 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed.
Grade 8
In grade 8 English, 41 percent of students scored advanced, 51 percent were proficient, 6 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning. In 2014, 26 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 67 percent were proficient, 7 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning.
The data also revealed 35 percent of eighth graders received advanced scores on the MCAS math exam, while 39 percent were proficient, 17 percent needed improvement and 8 percent received a warning. In 2014, 26 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 41 percent were proficient, 23 percent needed improvement and 10 percent received a warning.
In grade 8 science, 6 percent of students were advanced, 51 percent were proficient, 38 percent needed improvement and 5 percent received a warning. In 2014, 8 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 47 percent were proficient, 40 percent needed improvement and 6 percent received a warning.
Grade 7
According to DESE, 20 percent of seventh graders were advanced on the MCAS English exam, while 69 percent were proficient, 8 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning. In 2014, 23 percent of seventh graders were advanced, 67 percent were proficient, 8 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.
The data also revealed 38 percent of seventh graders were advanced on the MCAS math exam, while 43 percent were proficient, 13 percent needed improvement and 7 percent received a warning. In 2014, 27 percent of seventh graders were advanced, 34 percent were proficient, 27 percent needed improvement and 12 percent received a warning.
Grade 6
In grade 6 English, 27 percent of students were advanced, 59 percent were proficient, 10 percent needed proficient and 4 percent received a warning. In 2014, 33 percent were advanced, 50 percent were proficient, 16 needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning.
The data also revealed 41 percent of sixth graders received advanced scores on the MCAS math exam, while 37 percent were proficient, 17 percent needed improvement and 6 percent received a warning. In 2014, 47 percent of sixth graders were advanced, 38 percent were proficient, 11 percent needed improvement and 4 percent received a warning.
Grade 5
In grade 5 English, 34 percent of students were advanced, 48 percent were proficient, 14 percent needed improvement and 4 percent received a warning. In 2014, 38 percent were advanced, 46 percent were proficient, 13 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.
The data also revealed 47 percent of fifth graders were advanced on the MCAS math exam, while 34 percent were proficient, 15 percent needed improvement and 4 percent received a warning. In 2014, 48 percent were advanced, 35 percent were proficient, 11 percent needed improvement and 6 percent received a warning.
Additionally, 30 percent of eighth graders received advanced scores on the MCAS science exam, while 42 percent were proficient, 26 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning. In 2014, 30 percent were advanced, 38 percent were proficient, 28 percent needed improvement and 4 percent received a warning.
Grade 4
In grade 4 English, 38 percent of students were advanced, 48 percent were proficient, 12 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning. In 2014, 50 percent were advanced, 37 percent were proficient, 11 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.
According to DESE, 42 percent of Summer Street School fourth graders were advanced on the MCAS English exam while 48 percent were proficient, 10 percent needed improvement and none received a warning. At Huckleberry Hill School, 36 percent of fourth graders were advanced on the MCAS English exam, 49 percent were proficient, 12 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.
In grade 4 math, 43 percent of students were advanced, 43 percent were proficient, 14 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2014, 48 percent of fourth graders were advanced, 39 percent were proficient, 11 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.

Grade 3
In grade 3 English, 23 percent of students were advanced, 61 percent were proficient, 16 percent needed improvement and none received a warning. In 2014, 31 percent of third graders were advanced, 55 percent were proficient, 13 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning.
According to DESE, 25 percent of Summer Street third graders were advanced on the MCAS English exam, while 59 percent were proficient, 16 percent needed improvement and none received a warning. At Huckleberry Hill School, 22 percent of third graders were advanced, 63 percent were proficient, 16 percent needed improvement and none received a warning.
In grade 3 math, 52 percent of third graders were advanced, 44 percent were proficient, 4 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2014, 62 percent of third graders were advanced, 32 percent were proficient, 4 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning.
According to DESE, 62 percent of Summer Street third graders were advanced, 35 percent were proficient, 2 percent needed improvement and none received a warning. At Huckleberry Hill, 42 percent of third graders were advanced, 52 percent were proficient, 6 percent needed improvement and none received a warning.
