WAKEFIELD — An egged house, a couple of suspicious bags and a small child trying to cross a busy street by himself were among the calls answered by police yesterday.

Police were told just before 8 a.m. that a backpack had been abandoned at Galvin Middle School. Police said it was a bag of sand; police disposed of it.

Firefighters and Action Ambulance went to the Yeuell School in Greenwood after police were told around 9:40 a.m. that a student there was out of control. He was taken to the hospital.

A Pleasant Street resident reported her house was egged sometime before the 9:51 a.m. call to police.

Trucks were reportedly parked on the sidewalk at the intersection of North Avenue and Lakeside Avenue yesterday around 10:30 a.m., causing pedestrians to walk out into the street. Police responded and said the vehicles had been moved.

A vehicle was reportedly parked on a sidewalk on Greenwood Street around 11 a.m. Police found no violations.

A traffic signal at Albion Street and Broadway was not working around 11:20 a.m. The Fire Department was notified (a firefighter is in charge of public alarms and traffic lights).

The U.S. Postal Service reported around 11:55 a.m. that a black bag was found underneath a mailbox on Albion Street and appeared suspicious. The bag was found to be empty.

A landscaping vehicle was parked in “deliberate violation” of posted signage on Common Street yesterday around 12:45 p.m., a caller told police. The vehicle was gone when police arrived.

A child, approximately 5 years old wearing a green shirt and jeans, was seen crossing the street by himself around 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Church and Common streets. Police were not able to find the child and police believe child and mother left the area.

A man reportedly fell off a bicycle on Water Street just before 2 p.m. The man was OK, police said.

A brush fire was reported around 4:40 p.m. on Audubon Road.

Unattended packages were found on a bench in the Gertrude Spaulding Park on Lowell Street near the Lake around 5 p.m. Police determined the packages were from Fred’s Franks.

At 6:50 p.m., police were told that a bus carrying the Wakefield Memorial High varsity and junior varsity baseball teams was struck by a crossing gate arm while it was stuck in traffic on Broadway. The bus pulled over in the Mike’s Gym parking lot.

A duck struck by a motor vehicle on Spring Street was taken by a resident to an area veterinary hospital around 7:10 p.m.

An erratic moped was reported driving north on Main Street near Salem Street with no headlight on around 9:30 p.m.
