MELROSE — City Hall and its immediate environments were evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious package was found in one of the mailboxes in the alleyway separating the Post Office from Melrose’s governmental building.

Police Chief Mike Lyle said City Hall was closed and everyone told to leave around 12:30 p.m. Bomb experts working for the State Police came to Melrose and soon deemed the situation safe around 1:30 p.m.

The suspicious package, Lyle explained, was some sort of object — possibly cardboad — wrapped in aluminum foil.

The chief credited the State Police with a great response time and had much praise for his men and others who work for the city.

The evacuation came one day after the 2016 party presidential primaries were held.
