WAKEFIELD — Wakefield hosted and celebrated our 20th and final “Take the Lake” on Sunday, June 16. The rain held out for our over 600 registrants (including 44 Wakefieldians) who helped add to the over $300,000 raised for cancer charities over that time. Before we “Return the Lake” back to Wakefield and the community, the Mignosa family and the event organizers wanted to express our thanks.

First, thanks to the Town of Wakefield for letting us host the event in the scenic (and thankfully flat) venue around Lake Quannapowitt. Next, to the teams and especially the families like the Connells who showed up for us time and again – we appreciate your support. Thanks also to the 67 volunteers and friends from Reading, Wakefield and beyond. And finally – thanks to the sponsorships from local small businesses including A Cut Above, JA Packaging and Adesa.

Over 20 years these supporters helped us raise and donate over $300,000 to cancer related charities. This year’s event will add at least $13,000 to that total for the benefit of the Mass General Hospital ESSCO breast cancer research fund.

“Take the Lake” was created and is dedicated to Janice (Mignosa) Frye who traced her roots to Wakefield. A Wakefield High School Class of 1980 scholar and thespian, and Lucius Beebe library regular, Janice loved all things literary. She lost her battle with cancer in 1999 and her family created the run/walk to pay tribute to her and the organizations that reach out and help the countless local families afflicted by this insidious disease.

While “Take the Lake” has hosted its final run, we hope the sense of community, fundraising and celebration which the community helped us create will continue and grow.
