WAKEFIELD — The theft of copper piping from a vacant home on Crescent Street caused a water leak inside the home, bringing the Department of Public Works to the scene.

On Sunday morning at about 9:15, the homeowner found that the home had been broken into and copper piping valued at about $500 had been ripped out, causing the leak.

Police notified the Department of Public Works about the water leak and a crew responded to shut off water service to the home.

Police are investigating the incident.

Just after 1 a.m. Saturday a Wakefield woman was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Patrol Officer Amy Toothaker was on patrol in the area of Albion Street at about 1 a.m. Saturday when she noticed that a headlight was out on a brown Chevrolet Malibu. She followed the driver to Water Street where she was stopped.

Following a check with the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Toothaker arrested Nicole M. Marino, 28, 124 Salem St., apartment C on a charge of driving without a valid license. She was also cited for having a defective headlight. Toothaker also discovered that Marino was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Lynn District Court.

She was arraigned in Malden District Court today.

A Nikishi bicycle valued at about $250 was reported as stolen by a Cutter Street resident on Friday night. The victim told police he had locked the bike at the North Avenue train station and while he was gone for the day someone cut the lock and stole the bike.

The lock was not found anywhere near where the bike was parked, said police. The incident was reported just after 8 p.m.

In other police business over the weekend, beginning Friday:

• A Main Street resident reported the theft of checks from an unspecified location in Medford. Police are looking into the matter, reported at about 9:20 a.m.

• Police sent two men on their way following a call about suspicious activity on Water Street. The incident was logged at about 1:15 p.m.

• A collision was reported at the Rte. 129 rotary at about 4:20 p.m. Papers were exchanged. The Fire Department and Action Ambulance also responded, along with State Police, who handled the accident scene.

• A collision on Rte. 128 north involving a black BMW occurred just before 5:30 p.m. State Police were notified.

• Police sent a group of people on their way following a complaint received at about 6 p.m.

On Saturday:

• Police resolved a matter concerning a verbal argument in an apartment on West Water Street at 8:30 a.m.

• A Lake Street resident reported the theft of a purple girl’s bike and two Razor scooters with an overall value of about $100. The victim told police he shares space in a garage with other tenants and that was where the stolen items were stored. There were no signs of forced entry. The incident was logged just after noon.

• A caller reported that someone in his neighborhood observed a woman entering a backyard and taking photos of the property. She left the area in a black Lexus. Police responded to the call at about 3:30 p.m. but found nothing out of order.

• A minor collision occurred on North Avenue at 5:50 p.m. Injuries were not reported.

• A caller reported that raw sewage was seeping from the ground near a sewer cover at the Rte. 129 rotary. The Department of Public Works was notified at about 12:10 p.m.

• A minor motor vehicle accident was reported at the corner of Church and Lafayette streets at about 4:15 p.m. Injuries were not reported.

• A caller reported that tree workers were causing a disturbance on Melrose Terrace at 6:20 p.m. Police resolved the matter.
