NEWBURY — On Monday afternoon, the North Reading High golf team edged host Triton, 144-143, at Ould Newbury Golf Club on a sunny, warm day.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 2-0.

“It was a good team effort,” said Hornets rookie head coach Jon Kiniry. “Our top guys played well and our seventh and eight players surprised me.”

Leo Romanski led the way with 28 points (Stableford scoring) while Conrad Gerber had 28. Jason Curran added 26 while Max Forristall 24.

The final two scores that counted were Bryanden Carlson with 21 while Tom Gazda had 16.

“That is a tough course,” pointed out Kiniry. “They have a lot of elevated greens so it is easy to go over if you get too aggressive or come up short.”

Kiniry picked up his first win as a varsity coach in the season opener as the Hornets beat guest Manchester-Essex, 175-146, on Sept. 3 at Hillview Golf Club.

“It was nice to win it at home,” said Kiniry. “The kids were very supportive.”

Romanski led the way shooting even par to score 36 points. Forristall and Liam Blanchette both scored 30.

“All three of those guys did well,” said Kiniry. “To score 30 points in a match is big.”

Curran had 28 while Liam Talbot chipped in 26 points.

The sixth score to count was Gerber who had 25.

The next two matches for the Hornets will also be at home as they face Newburyport on Sept. 12 and Rockport on Sept. 17.

The Newburyport match will start at 3:30 p.m. while the Rockport match will start a little later at 4 p.m.
