NORTH READING — Red Delicious, McIntosh, Gala, Granny Smith? Whatever your favorite apple might be, you won’t want to miss the North Reading Apple Festival on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1720 Rev. Daniel Putnam House grounds, 27 Bow St. (rain date: Sunday, Sept. 24).

Hosted by the North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society, the Apple Festival is always a fun day out for all the family and the Festival helps the Society raise funds to preserve and protect the history of North Reading.

This year, the Apple Festival will feature live entertainment throughout, apple pie and ice cream, food and drinks (including hot cider), kids activities and pony rides, craft and merchandise booths, as well as an art show, raffle and silent auction plus 50/50 and gift card raffles.

The Putnam House, Farm Museum, West Village School House, First Meeting House, Tin and Cobbler’s Shop, Sgt. Flint House and barn will  be open to the public. Festival-goers are welcome to park in the lot at the Union Congregational Church and on nearby streets. A limited amount of handicapped parking is also available.

CLASSIC APPLE PIE CONTEST

The Festival will also feature a Classic Apple Pie Contest in which all local bakers (young, old, and in-between) are invited to enter a pie that will be judged on taste, texture, and appearance. Winners and runners-up will win prizes and major bragging rights!

OFFICIAL CLASSIC APPLE PIE CONTEST RULES

Walk-up contest open to North Reading residents only. Youth entrants must be between ages 12-17; adult entrants must be 18 or older.

Pies must be made from scratch and delivered at room temperature. Top and bottom crusts required; no crumb crusts or nuts, raisins, cranberries or other fruits allowed. Lattice pastry work, decorative cutouts, and decorations with food coloring and/or sugars are permitted.

Attach a piece of paper to the bottom of the entry pie containing the entrant’s name, address, phone number, and (if youth), age. Deliver contest pies to the Putnam House between 8–10 a.m. on the day of the Apple Festival. Pick up non-disposable pie plates by 3 p.m.
