NORTH READING – Incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) will face Republican challenger John Deaton in November.

In what was the only contested race on the local September 3 State Primary ballot – a three-way showdown on the Republican ballot between Robert J. Antonellis, Ian Cain and John Deaton – the latter came out on top, garnering 484 of the 874 total Republican ballots cast.

Finishing a distant second among North Reading Republicans was Antonellis with 282 votes while Cain polled just 39 votes. Rounding out the tally were 63 blanks and six write-ins according to the unofficial results announced by the Office of Town Clerk Susan Duplin Tuesday night.

On the Democratic side of the ticket, Warren got 1,151 votes out of 1,224 ballots cast in the primary. There were also 15 write-ins and 58 blanks.

Statewide, Deaton, a USMC veteran and attorney, emerged as the challenger to the senior senator according to the Associated Press. Mirroring the local results, Deaton polled 132,986 votes (64.9%) with more than 90 percent of the state’s precincts reporting their results as of Tuesday night. The statewide tally for Warren was not posted Tuesday night; just the word “uncontested” was notated. She has held the Senate seat since 2013. The two camps are now bartering ground rules for debates to take place next month leading up to the Nov. 5 general election.
