WAKEFIELD — The Lou Tompkins All Star Baseball League Townies A team was back at it on Thursday evening as it hosted Lynnfield in an A Division contest at Walsh Field.

The skies threatened to shorten the game but the rain held off and the game was shortened by the mercy rule as the Townies smashed Lynnfield by a 14-0 final after four and a half innings.

“We’re just playing solid baseball, we’re not giving away any outs, it’s just a solid group,” Manager Butch Coughlin said following the win.

“We’re kind of sharing pitchers with the (Senior Little League) All-Star team. They’re playing in the national tournament so it’s been all hands on deck for us for pitchers. They probably have three out of our top five so Jordan Fauci stepped up twice in the last 10 days,” Coughlin added.

The Townies have called on some unexpected arms to help them and the Wakefield players have answered the call.

“Tyler Pugsley pitched for the first time in a year on Tuesday and pitched well, we beat Winchester 7-2,” said Coughlin. “We’re playing solid defense. We turned a couple double plays, had a few runners thrown out caught stealing, Even balls that got hit well were right at them. We had a couple of nice plays out there, Tyler had a nice pick at first on a ball in the dirt. We get a lot of help, Nick Porter filled in catching for the first time in a while, giving Brendan (Coughlin) a break. They’re just a good, athletic group of kids, it makes it easy.”

Wakefield jumped head early in this game, plating four runs in the first inning. The first three batters reached safely with Cole Kraus and Tim Hurley singling and coming around to score on a Nick Porter double. Kevin DeLeary doubled after the first out, then Colin Jaena singled home DeLeary.

Meanwhile, on the mound for the Townies Fauci was throwing strikes and didn’t walk a batter while allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out two.

Lynnfield went in order in its half of the second while Fauci struck out two in the inning.

The second inning was the only inning Wakefield didn’t put any runs up on the board although it had two runners on base when Coughlin singled and Kyle Grossi walked.

Wakefield went on to have a huge third inning scoring nine runs while walking four times and slugging five hits including a two-RBI double by Kraus and a two-RBI triple by Hurley.

Lynnfield failed to record a hit in the fourth inning while Wakefield added another run on two more hits and a walk.

After Lynnfield went in order in its half of the fifth, the game was finalized with the mercy rule being enacted.

With the win the Wakefield moves to 7-1 on the year with 15 points putting them two points clear of Brookline and Cambridge who sit on 13 points in the East division standings of the league. The Townies also beat Belmont by a 12-6 score on Saturday at Belmont High School.

Lynnfield fell to 1-6 in the East division with the loss.

The Townies next game is Tuesday night at 5:45 p.m. when it takes on Revere at Revere High School.
