WAKEFIELD — The Middlesex League’s wrestling coaches met at the end of the season to vote on All-Stars for the unique 2021 spring campaign. 

Seven members of the 10-0 Freedom Division champion Wakefield Warriors were named All-Stars this season and four were named to the league’s All-Conference team consisting of 14 total members.

Wakefield head coach Ross Ickes was also named the Middlesex League’s Coach of the Year.

All-Stars Jimmy Grover, Jason Hubbard, Anselm Schools and Joao Valdevino were named to the All-Conference team. All four were seniors for the Warriors this year.

In addition to those four, senior Luke Fitzgerald, junior Ana Valdevino and freshman Logan Bayers were also named to the Freedom Division All-Star team. 

The following personal records only account for contested matches and do not include forfeit victories. 

Grover went 8-1 in contested matches. The All-Conference team includes 14 spots from each weight class. Grover made the All-Conference team at 195. He was also named to the Boston Globe’s wrestling All-Scholastic team. 

Hubbard was 8-1 in contested matches this season. The senior made the All-Conference team at 152. His clutch pin in sudden victories helped Wakefield beat rival Melrose in a battle of undefeated’s to claim the league title. 

Joao Valdevino was undefeated at 6-0 in contested matches. The senior made the All-Conference team at 182 and was named a Globe All-Scholastic Honorable Mention. 

Schools went 6-1 this season and made the All-Conference team at 160. He also contributed a big win against Melrose.

Fitzgerald went 5-2 in contested matches during his senior season. He was one of two Freedom Division All-Stars named at 126.

Ana Valdevino was one of three girls’ wrestling All-Stars named. One of the junior’s two season victories came via a pin against Watertown All-Star Leah Knipper-Davis. 

Bayers went 2-1 this season. He was one of two Freedom All-Stars named at 106.

Wakefield’s four All-Conference All-Stars led the league. Burlington was next with three. The Warriors beat the Red Devils this season. Joao Valdevino, Ana Valdevino, Grover and Schools all had wins for Wakefield in that match. 

Watertown and Melrose each had two All-Conference All-Stars.
