Lynnfield falls to Millbury 6-5 (June 2)

LYNNFIELD — In their regular-season finale on May 22, the Lynnfield High softball team lost 10-3 at home to Pentucket on a hot, sunny day. The Panthers were able to sweep the season series against the Pioneers as they won 2-0 back on April 29 in the first meeting.
With the loss, the Pioneers ended up at 8-12 overall and 6-10 in the Cape Ann League. They finished in 3rd place in the CAL Baker Division. Pentucket, meanwhile, improved to 13-5 overall and 12-4 in the CAL.
Lynnfield got two runs in the first. Lily Williams and Morgan Hubbard each drew walks. Kaila George plated Williams with an infield ground out and Ava Gamache singled in Hubbard with a two-out RBI.
The Panthers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second and added three more in the fifth. They then scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Catie Kampersal had the only other hit Pioneer with a fifth-inning single.
Lynnfield’s other run came in the bottom of the sixth. Hubbard and George walked. Both moved up on a wild pitch and Hubbard scored on a Libby Considine ground out to make it 6-3 at that point.
“We’re not playing our best right now,” admitted Pioneers head coach Hector Longo. “We had a total of three hits in our last two games. We will have a little bit a time off and will try to balance our senior week activities with solid pre-tourney work.”
The team will have over a week in-between games as the Division 4 playoff seedings came out on May 29 (opponent, date and time unknown as of press time).
“The time on the practice field for our younger girls will be almost as important as the tourney game or games themselves,” pointed out Longo.
Lynnfield finished ranked 18th in the MIAA Div. 4 power rankings.
