MELROSE—The Melrose High girls’ tennis team picked up their first win of the season after a 3-2 squeaker over Stoneham on Friday, April 28 at Stoneham High School.

Captain Olivia Zibatis fought hard in first singles, playing a tough three set match before falling to Louisa Melchionno 6-2, 2-6, 2-6. In 2nd singles Julia McLaughlin beat her opponent, Stephanie Lee, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Isabel Bates had a great battle at 3rd singles vs. Erin Clearly before falling 3-6, 2-6.

The sister team of Denning and Denning (Catherine and Colleen) had a battle at 1st doubles. “It took them a set to warm up, figure out their strategy and play their game,” says their coach Deb Deacon. The two won in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Maeve McGillicuddy and Annie Kavanaugh also played well and helped Melrose take the win in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Playing in JV match play were the following players and scores: Emma Bates and Helen Burtnett were victorious, 6-2. Amber Chow and Janice Tang won, 6-3. Elise Nerden and Lindsay Cataldo won 6-2. Alex LeComte and Alex Blais battled before falling, 8-10. Natalie Smith and Sarah Mackowski fell short at 2-6. Kendall Brady and Abby Champoux fell 0-6.

Melrose looks to pick up another win when they travel to Winchester on Friday at 3:30.
