Vincenzo-Margherita-obit-webWAKEFIELD — Vincenzo P. Margherita, 86, of Wakefield passed away on Wednesday, April 13 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Born in Siracusa, Italy on Jan. 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Francesco and Carmela (Palma) Margherita.

Mr. Margherita was raised and educated in Siracusa, Italy and moved to Wakefield in 1954. He served in the Italian Army and was a referee in the Italian Soccer League. Mr. Margherita was a retired machinist for Kytron Circuits in Wakefield and a long time employee of L.B. Evans. He had served twice as the past Grand Knight for the Wakefield Chapter Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Italian American club in Wakefield. Mr. and Mrs. Margherita had just renewed their wedding vows after 60 years of marriage. He was an avid fan of Boston Sports (go Red Sox!) for over 50 years and enjoyed puzzles and games.

He is survived by his wife Rose (Battaglia) Margherita. He is also survived by his son Frank Margherita and his wife Mary of Wakefield; and his daughter Deborah Kepler and her husband Harry E. of Medical Lake, Wash. Mr. Margherita is also survived by his six grandchildren, one great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Anthony Battaglia and sister-in-law Domenica Opland. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Angela Caia and Maria Lafayette.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday, April 20 at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., in Wakefield at 10 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
