Love of Bingo, crocheting, baking and traveling

WAKEFIELD — Barbara Ann Hammersley, age 95 of Wakefield passed away on Sunday, December 15 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. 

She was born in Somerville on November 18, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Theresa R. (Eason) Rohwedder. Born on November 18, 1929 in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Theresa R. (Eason) Rohwedder. Barbara was raised in Somerville’s Teele Square and was a proud graduate of St. Clements, Class of 1947. She began her family life with her first husband in Jefferson Park, Cambridge. Later, while at the Irish American Club, she met her second husband Francis V. Hammersley with whom she married and moved to Malden in 1969 continuing to grow their family. In 2005, Barbara relocated to Wakefield.

Barbara was known for her love of BINGO frequenting various halls where she made many cherished friends. She enjoyed watching games such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and had a passion for crocheting, baking and cooking. Additionally, she treasured her travels with fond memories of her trips to Aruba, Europe and Hawaii.

She was the beloved wife of the late Francis V. Hammersley. She was the loving mother of Michael J. Hogan, Jr. and his wife Carol of Newport Richey, FL; Kathleen A. (Hogan) Burton and her husband Bill of Billerica; Arthur T. Hogan and his wife Elizabeth of Venice, FL; Kerry T. Hogan and his wife Maureen of Londonderry, NH; Jerry F. Hammersley and his wife Francine of Wakefield; and the late Kevin B. Hogan. She was the sister of Arthur C. Rohwedder and his late wife Elizabeth and Frederick Rohwedder and his surviving wife Phyllis of FL. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband Michael Hogan. 

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated in Lazarus Center for Healing Shrine/St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield on Thursday, December 19 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday, December 18 from 4 to 7 p.m..
