Ophthalmologist, Mason was proud of Lebanese heritage

STONEHAM — George Elias Ghareeb, M.D. of Stoneham, Ma. passed away on November 23, 2021 at the age of 87.

He was born in Springfield, MA to Elias Kallil and Theada Ghareeb.

He attended Classical High School in Springfield, Tufts University and Boston University for his medical degree. He did his internship and residency in Boston. He maintained a private practice of ophthalmology in Reading for 35 years and established the Department of Ophthalmology at Winchester Hospital where he was on the staff for many years.  He was an excellent surgeon and took great pleasure in interacting with his patients.

He was an active member of the Massachusetts Medical Society at both the state and district levels.  He was a Mason for 65 years.  He loved researching his Lebanese genealogy, traveling, anything to do with trains, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed reading, music and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Herriman Bancroft Ghareeb; his children Cornelia Mariam Ghareeb (Tom) of Malden, Pamela Gayle Gudino (Juan) of San Jose, CA, George Andrew Charles Ghareeb (Nicole) of Stoneham, and Melissa Nan Ghareeb (Andrei) of Medford.  He is also survived by five grandchildren, Marisa, Maya, Gemma, George and Eleni.

Services will be private and are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
