A man of honor whose life reflects a love of family and generosity

NEWBURYPORT — Joseph Buonomo of Newburyport, MA passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the age of 97. Joe was a man of honor, whose life reflects a love of family, friends, country and a generosity to many charities.

Formerly of Saco, ME and recently moved to Newburyport, MA; Born in Somerville, he graduated from Somerville High School and received his Accounting and Finance Degrees from Bentley College. He mastered a Public Speaking Course at Dale Carnegie and was certified to teach others. His career positions included Investment Executive at Tucker Anthony, Executive Vice President at F.L. Putnam President, Boston Securities Traders Association and operated his own office in Income Tax Services and Real Estate. Joe also served as President and Senior Vice President of The National Association for Retarded Citizens. He was appointed by President Carter as a member of The President’s Committee on Mental Retardation.

He served in the US Army Medical Corps in World War II where he earned three Battle Stars. A Member of the V.F.W. and The American Legion, he was a proud Charter Member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

Amongst his passions, he enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, a great game of golf and was a talented singer in a Barber Shop Quartet.

He was the brother of two pre-deceased sisters, Florence Mirlocca and Marie D’Alessandro. Joe married his loving wife, Doris (Sterner) Buonomo on Sept. 16, 1950, they had 71 wonderful years together. He was the proud father of two wonderful sons, Stephen from Amesbury, MA and Paul (deceased in 2018). Loving grandfather to Matthew Buonomo and Krista Sanders and great grandfather to Matthew, Brynn and Aria Buonomo. Uncle to many nieces and nephews, Barbara Mirlocca, Fran Grohman, Robert Morgan, Carol O’Connor (deceased), Lucille Henderson and Mark D’Alessandro.

Family and friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday July 27, 2021 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. His funeral service will follow in the funeral home and burial will be at a later date. There is no longer any parking available behind the funeral home per order of the city of Newburyport.
