BARNSTABLE — The Wakefield High golf team started their 2023 season on Aug. 28 on the Cape with a matchup against Barnstable High at historic Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds. 

Two Warriors won their individual matchups against the Red Hawks while another two tied. 

Wakefield freshman Patrick Maloney played very well at the No. 1 position, shooting a 37 for a 6-3 head-to-head victory, in which a point is earned for each hole win. It was Maloney’s first varsity victory in his first match.

Sophomore Alex Tracy was also victorious in his first varsity match at No. 8 on a 6-3 score after shooting a 52. 

“Congratulations to Patrick and Alex on winning their first varsity matches,” said head coach Chris Keane. 

Junior Daegan Pothier had Wakefield’s second best score of the day with a 41. He fell to his opponent 5-4 at No. 3. Junior Luke Greif played well at No. 2 with a 42 but he fell to another tough opponent 7-2. 

Seniors Liam McNeill and Tylor Roycroft shot steady 44’s. McNeill, at the 5th position tied, 4.5-4.5.

Senior Dylan Wickwire also tied 4.5-4.5 at No. 7 after shooting a 47. Sophomore Jake Morris shot a 49 at No. 6. 

“We competed very well against Barnstable,” said Keane. “We’re a young team who will improve all season.”

The Warriors will focus on that improvement for their next match, which will take place on Thursday at their home Thomson Country Club in North Reading against Northeast Metro Tech at 4 p.m.
