U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and longtime town official

WAKEFIELD — William E. Chetwynd, 75, of Wakefield, died Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Born in Wakefield on February 15, 1944 he was the son of the late Paul and Thelma (Hatch) Chetwynd.

Bill was raised in Wakefield and was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1961 and later went on to Lowell Technical. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Melrose and was a Past Master at the Golden Rule Lodge of Masons AF&AM. Bill was very involved in the Wakefield community and was one of the founders of the Boys and Girls Club of Wakefield, was on the Board of Directors at the Wakefield Citizen Scholarship Foundation, was a chairman of the Wakefield School Committee, and was involved in the start of the Farmers Market. He also acted as an independent business consultant.

Bill was the beloved husband of Joan (Gray) Chetwynd. He was the loving father of Lauralyn Chetwynd Patterson and her husband Charlie of Reading, Beth Austin and her partner Bob Desrochers and Susan Collard, all of Wakefield, and the late Mark Austin. He was the brother of Elaine Kaloustian of Melrose, Brad Chetwynd of Bolton, Alice Chetwynd and Phillip Chetwynd, both of Wakefield, and the late Bob Chetwynd and Phyllis Ann Chetwynd. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brittney, Jake, Christopher, Erica, Brianna, Austin, Sophie, and Clementine.

His funeral service will be in the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday at 11 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday from 3-7 p.m.
