WAKEFIELD — A 29-year-old Salem man was arrested last night and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute after police questioned him in the parking lot of the Lakeside Inn on North Avenue.

Police were monitoring the parking lot at 595 North Avenue when they observed a BMW sedan drive into the lot and then drive around several times. Officers believed that the maneuver was done to determine if anyone was following him.

After the man parked and got out of the car, he continued to look nervously around the parking lot, police said. Officers approached him and in the course of continuing their investigation, they located a bag on him containing a substance believed to be cocaine. They arrested Diomedes Lugo, of 16 March St. in Salem, Mass. At 53 grams, the amount was enough to charge Lugo with distribution. It was at least his second drug distribution charge.

Lugo was scheduled to appear in Malden District Court today.

The Fire Department responded to six calls yesterday, of which four were for medical aid. The remaining non-medical calls all involved accidental or malfunctioning alarms.
