Roberto earns All-Conference and MVP honors

WAKEFIELD — The 2021 Wakefield High boys’ cross country team had a season to remember. The Warriors went undefeated in dual meets to win their 6th consecutive Middlesex League Freedom Division championship.

They went on to win the Middlesex League Championship Meet and after taking 2nd in the Div. 2 A State Meet, Wakefield made history with an All-State Championship for the first time in program history since 1972.

Five Warriors were recently named league All-Stars: senior captains Thomas Dowd, Ajay Haridasse and Michael Roberto, juniors Leith Jones and Ben Stratton and sophomore Michael Arria.

Roberto was named league MVP. The future UMass Lowell runner also topped the seven-man All-Conference team.

“These All Stars carried us through the whole season all the way to an All State Championship title,” said head coach Perry Pappas. “When one of them had an off day, another stepped up. They came together as a team all season long.”

Wakefield led the balloting followed by four from Melrose and two from Burlington.
