BOSTON — The Wakefield boys’ indoor track and field team had their best Middlesex League Championship performance ever on Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center, as they placed 2nd overall scoring 64 points.

Two school records on the boys’ side were broken. Bradley Diaz stepped away from his main event, the 600 meters, to run a scorching fast 35.80 in the 300 meters, placing 2nd. The time is a new WMHS school record previously held by Brian Laurits set back in 2000.

To follow that record up, Diaz anchored the 4×400 meter relay along with Lucas Kehoe, James Christie and Michael Roberto as they ran a time of 3:30.68 to break the record. The previous record holders from 2017 were Brian Smith, Ryan Sullivan, Dan Summers and Adam Roberto.

The big surprise of the day was Jack Berinato pulling off the upset in the 55 meter dash in his first season at the sport. Berinato won the event with an eye-popping personal best time of 6.74 having only previously run 8.03. Berinato is .04 seconds off tying the school record.

Lucas Kehoe placed 6th in a time of 6.95 to put points on the board. Ryan Tracy ran a PR of 7.20.

Kehoe also placed 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 21’2.25”.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Josh Catino ran a time of 9.66. Freshman Brody Wyatt ran a PR of 11.73. Freshman Patrick Murphy ran a time of 12.04.

In the mile, Michael Roberto ran a strong race in the mile placing 2nd. Roberto had to take the lead early and do all the hard work pacing the rest of the field for most of the race. His time of 4:28.45 was a PR.

Ben Stratton placed 5th in a time of 4:36, an indoor PR. Ollie Polster also had a PR running 5:07.

In the 600 meters, James Christie ran a time of 1:31.58 to place 9th. Joseph Patt ran a PR of 1:33.46. Will Riley ran a PR of 1:34.67.

In the 1000 meters, sophomore William Mezikofsky continues to surprise as he placed an impressive 5th in the championship. His time of 2:47.58 is a personal best. Fellow sophomore Liam Taggart also had a PR running 2:52.77. Braden Carroll also had a PR in 2:54.59.

In the 2 mile, Leith Jones placed 6th in a PR of 10:14. Thomas Dowd placed 7th in a time of 10:18. Matt McCoy ran a big PR of 11:03.

In addition to Diaz in the 300 meters, Jonathan Courtright ran a PR of 40.32. Brian Casey also had a PR of 41.17.

In the shot put, Haris Hodzic thew 33’1”. Robert Hagopian had a PR of 32’3.25”. Ben Ryder had a PR of 27’3”.

The 4×200 meter relay team of Berinato, Tracy, Courtright and Jack Ahearne placed 4th in a time of 1:39.87.
