Warriors fall to Wilmington, race Melrose today

WRENTHAM — Sammy Seabury made history on Oct. 2 when she came in first place at the Bay State Invitational in Wrentham. The Wakefield senior finished with a time of 18:49.9. That’s an average mile time of 6:03.6. Seabury was a full 10 seconds faster than the 2nd place finisher.

“She ran such a fantastic race,” said Wakefield girls’ cross country head coach Karen Barrett. “She started off in the front of the pack and stayed there for the first two and a half miles. She looked extremely strong and with 800 meters left I told her to go for it. She has such much mental toughness and pulled away to a huge victory.”

Seabury finished strong over the gradual uphill of the last 200 meters.

Seabury’s time was monumental for a multitude of reasons.

First, it was the fastest time a Wakefield female athlete has ever run that course.

It also set a school record for the fastest time ever run for a 5K by a female athlete. Seabury broke the previous 5K record of 18:50 set by Margot Thistle.

“I could not be prouder of her effort and attitude,” said Barrett of Seabury. “She works so hard everyday and I am so happy that it paid off for her.”

Warriors fall to Wildcats

The Wakefield High girls’ cross country team dropped a close race against Wilmington last Tuesday at Wakefield High by a score of 26-31.

There are no official times from the meet as the official had a watch malfunction.

Seabury took first overall for her second dual meet victory of the season.

Wilmington took places 2 through 5 to take control of the race.

Wakefield made it close by getting 6-12 overall. Madison Nett was 6th followed by Maggie Leone, Charlotte O’Neill, Julia Welch, Devon Jellison, Alexa Yianacopolus and Grace Brackett.

“We definitely improved (from the first meet vs. Winchester) but not enough to overpower Wilmington’s pack,” said Barrett. “We will keep working in hopes of having a very competitive meet against Melrose.”
