WAKEFIELD — Wakefield is hoping their first win of the season on April 20 is a sign of things to come. The Warrior offense broke out against the Hawks with 10 goals to help the squad come away with a 10-8 victory.

The offense stayed locked in against Revere the very next day, putting up 13 and the defense came away with a rare shutout as Wakefield improved to 2-3 on the season.

Wakefield and Waltham traded leads throughout the game on Wednesday morning at Landrigan Field. The Hawks had the advantage at halftime as the Warriors shifted their focus to the second half in hopes of coming away with a win.

“We had a few turnovers that Waltham was able to capitalize on in the first half,” said Wakefield head coach Cara Luca. “During halftime, we talked about being confident and playing our game.”

Wakefield did just that in the final 24 minutes as their attack took off, led by junior Katherine Taylor who had a season-high six goals.

“The girls’ stepped it up in the second half,” said Luca. “They worked on quick passes and shots to the goal which threw off Waltham’s defense.”

In addition to Taylor’s great game, the Warriors also got single goals from four different players: senior captain Kaylee O’Rourke, junior Molly Berinato, sophomore Juliana Spaulding and sophomore Molly Forrest.

Senior captain Bella DiMare recorded nine saves in the win, coming up big in the second half.

“It was a good win, especially coming off an overtime heartbreaker to Woburn,” said Luca.

The Tanners edged the Warriors 6-5 in OT on April 12 at Landrigan Field. It was D2 Wakefield’s third loss in a row to start the season as they had a difficult schedule to start with three games against D1 and Middlesex League Liberty Division opponents, Lexington, Arlington and Woburn.

Wakefield moved to 2-3 with their 13-0 win over Revere on Thursday morning.

DiMare earned her first shutout of the season, a rare lacrosse feat, with multiple clutch stops.

“Bella has been very strong in net, coming up with key saves all season,” said Luca.

Wakefield’s entire defensive unit put together another strong game. It’s a group led this season by senior captain Angelina Nardone, along with senior Mary Rose Anjim, junior Isabella Birchem and midfielders O’Rourke, Spaulding and Forrest.

Offensively, the Warriors had seven different players find the back of the net, paced by three from Berinato. Forrest, senior Ally Forti and Kyleigh Formicola each had two goals. Junior Grace Seabury had a goal and an assist.

Senior captain Christina Covelle and senior Caroline Benedetto each had a goal.

Altogether, it was certainly the type of complete-game performance that the Warriors will look to replicate during this week’s key slate of matchups.

The Warriors will continue their home stand with divisional matchups against Stoneham (1-3) today and Wilmington (0-6) on Wednesday. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
