WATERTOWN — The Wakefield High girls’ tennis team traveled to Watertown on Wednesday for a key Middlesex League Freedom Division matchup against the Raiders.

The Warriors left town with a convincing 4-1 win which improved their record to 4-4 on the season.

“My girls stayed focused and strong to win every point,” said head coach Kathy Healey. “I’m very proud of them. They did a great job.”

Wakefield was victorious in both doubles matchups and two of their three singles matchups.

Senior captain Haley Ogier and freshman Toni Whitson continued their winning ways at first doubles with a hard-earned 7-6 victory in set one followed by a less stressful 6-1 count in set two. It was the duo’s fifth win in a row, going back to Wakefield’s April 11 win over Wilmington.

At second doubles, sophomores Ariannah Tringali and Erin Leary were victorious by set scores of 6-1, 6-4.

Senior captain Annie King worked hard to earn her triumph at second singles. King dropped the first set 6-3 but stormed back to dominate the second set 6-0 before finishing it up in the third set with a 6-3 score.

Junior Emma Fitzgerald also had to earn it in her matchup at third singles. She held on to win the first set 7-6 and won it in straight sets with a 6-1 advantage in set two.

With that win, Wakefield finished their first round of Freedom Division matches with a 3-2 record, also beating Stoneham and Wilmington while falling to Melrose and Burlington.

Wakefield’s match against Belmont was postponed yesterday. They have two matches against Liberty Division teams coming up as they host Winchester on Tuesday and travel to Reading on Thursday. Both will start at 4 p.m.
