Will send multiple athletes to state meet this weekend

BURLINGTON — The Wakefield High girls’ track and field team had a fantastic showing at the Middlesex League Championship meet on June 10 in Burlington. 

Sammy Seabury is the Middlesex League Champion for the two mile. She shattered her PR by 17 seconds running an unbelievable time of 11:20. Her last lap was her fastest.

“I was so impressed watching her race today,” said head coach Karen Barrett. “A time of 11:20 is the fastest in the two mile for a Wakefield girl in my 24 years of coaching. Sammy is 10 seconds off the school record and I think she has a great shot at it this weekend (at the state meet). I’m really proud of her.”

Sophie Brown also had a great day placing 2nd in the pole vault with an 8’6”. Brown also placed 6th in the 400 hurdles running a PR of 71.7.

“She has been working really hard and it definitely paid off. I’m really happy for her,” said Barrett.

Ashlee Purcell made it to the finals in the 200 and the long jump. She placed 6th in the 200 and jumped a PR of 15’7” for a 9th place finish.

“She is a great competitor,” said Barrett.

Maeve Recene placed 7th in the 400 with a 63.6. Caileigh Sweeney also ran the 400 with a PR of 65.2.

Elina Olmedo ran a great 800 placing 8th with a PR of 2:30.

Madison Nett scored for Wakefield placing 7th in the mile with a 5:43.

Amanda Nett got a PR in the long jump with a 15’2 leap.

Jacqui Woish placed 9th in the discus with a PR of 82’3”.

Bailey McDevitt placed 7th in the javelin with a PR of 89”.

“It was great to see all the PR’S today,” said Barrett. “The girls came to compete and did a fantastic job. We will now prepare for the state meet next weekend.”

The Div. 2 North State meet will be held at Weston High this weekend. The Warriors had multiple athletes qualify as announced in a performance list posted by the MIAA yesterday. They will send 17 to the state meet this weekend. 

Junior Sammy Seabury is the top ranked competitor in the two mile. She will be joined in the two mile at states by senior Maggie Ritchie (state seed: 13).

Junior Jade Roycroft (11) and senior ReignYah Grant (20) will compete in the 100 meter dash.

Junior Ashlee Purcell (8) and sophomore Ania Jacob (22) will compete in the 200 meter dash. Purcell will also be in the long jump (16). 

Junior Maeve Recene (8) and sophomore Caileigh Sweeney (14) will compete in the 400 meter dash.

Senior Elina Olmedo (7) will race in the 800 meters.

Sophomore Madison Nett (11) and junior Maggie Leone (17) will run in the one mile. 

Junior Sophie Brown (13) will compete in the 400 meter hurdles. Brown (5) will also be in the pole vault competition. 

Sophomore Elizabeth Roos (13) will compete in the high jump. 

Junior Amanda Nett (22) will join Purcell in the long jump. 

Wakefield will have two competitors in the shot put: junior Bailey McDevitt (12) and freshman Lauren Mangarelli (13). McDevitt will also be in the javelin (13). Junior Jacqui Woish will compete in the discus (14).
