BOSTON – The Wakefield High boys’ track and field team competed in an exciting Middlesex League meet on Monday, Feb. 5 at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Warriors made headlines in plenty of events as they featured a league champ, a broken school record and finished 4th overall.

The league meet is the only time where the Warriors get to compete against the whole league and crown one league champ.

“I am really proud of our team because we were missing some athletes but the rest of our kids stepped up and competed,” said head coach Ruben Reinoso.

Wakefield started with the mile where Rohan Singhvi was 4th with a PR time of 4:36.46 and Tanner Jellison was 5th with a PR time of 4:37.91. Tommy Lucey was 6th with a time of 4:44.35. Carter Margolis was 7th with a time of 4:45.91 and Riley Brackett ran a 4:51.92. It was the most milers that Wakefield ever had entered in the league meet. A team is typically allowed three, unless more make the qualifying standard.

In the 600 meters, Nick Connor ran a 1:31.93 and Trevor Zupan ran a 1:32.93.

While there were many notable performances for Wakefield, the two that will be remembered most from the 2018 Middlesex League Meet was Matt Greatorex’s performance in the 1K meter, and Pat Redmond’s shot put throws.

Redmond won the event with a throw of 47’4. The senior was the top thrower in the league all season, and is currently ranked number 1 in Division 4.

Alex Joly had a throw of 41’3.5 and Charles Senior had a throw of 36’3 to round out the Warriors in the shot put.

WMHS alum Stephen Robertson has held the 1000 meter school record since 2012, but records are meant to be broken. Greatorex finished second overall in the 1000 meters at the league meet with a new school record time of 2:34.28.

Billy Stevens finished 6th in the 1000 with a time of 2:42.71, a new PR.

In the high jump, Tommy Galvin tied for 7th with a leap of 5’8.

In the 300 meters, Jared Hurley ran a time of 38.81 and Tucker Stikeman crossed the line at 40.29.

In the 55 meter dash, Ryan Obear was 8th overall with a time of 7.02 and Travis Marsh ran a time of 7.5. Tommy Mottl was next at 7.53.

In the hurdles, Sam Morey ran a 9.13 and Cory Sample ran a 10.51.

In the 2 mile, Matt Roberto was 8th with a 10:09.15 and Casey Brackett ran a 10:24.69.

Mottl jumped 18’1.5 to lead the Warriors in the long jump.

Wakefield also made some noise in the relays as they have done all season. In the 4×200, Ryan Obera, Jared Hurley, Travis Marsh and Tommy Mottl were 7th overall with a time of 1:40.47.

In the 4×400, Matt Greatorex, Carter Margolis, Billy Stevens and Trevor Zupan were 5th overall with a time of 3:4.86.

“This is one of the strongest leagues in the state and some of our teams such as Burlington, Woburn, Lexington and Reading have been state champs and most with the exception of Burlington are either D1 or D2,” said Reinoso. “This is great for our kids to face these quality opponents because it prepares them for our state meet.”

The MIAA Division 4 State meet is scheduled for Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, Feb. 14.
