STONEHAM — Let’s just say, it’s nice to be back.

For the first time in 212 days, Wakefield Memorial High School student athletes competed in a sporting event.

Yesterday, the Wakefield golf team tee’d off their season at Bear Hill Golf Club against Freedom foe Stoneham. The Warriors, while surely taking a moment to enjoy the sun and their time together again on the links, got down to business quickly, winning nine of their 10 head-to-head matchups and escaping back down Prospect St. with a 47-25 victory.

The two teams are scheduled for a rematch today, 4 p.m. at Thomson Country Club in North Reading.

The Warriors had two players make par at Bear Hill’s Par 36 as seniors Jack Ryan and Oliver Miller both hit the mark. Ryan’s matchup hit a 35 for the best score of the day, edging Wakefield’s number one 5-4. That was the only matchup loss for Wakefield.

Miller’s 36 was good for a 6.5-2.5 victory over his opponent. In matchup scoring, one point is earned for each hole won. The half points are if the two players tie a hole.

Fellow seniors Cal Tryder and Luke Hopkins won their matchups 6-3 and 7-2, respectively. Tryder shot a 39 and Hopkins a 40.

Tino Rossetti (5-4), Howie Melanson (5-4) and Chris Power (5.5-3.5) all shot a 45. Charlie Shea had a great day from the eighth and final scoring spot for the Warriors. His 43 was good for an 8-1 matchup victory.

Jacob Barrett (8-1) and Donovan Foley (5.5-3.5) shot a 46 and 49 in reserve roles, proving that Wakefield has a deep team this year.

After their final Spartan showdown today, the Warriors will focus on two matches against Watertown next week.
