WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High softball team hosted Haverhill last night and lost 9-7 on a drizzly day at Vet’s Field.

“I hate losing and I know these kids hate losing,” said Wakefield coach Rich “Coach Q” Quattrocchi.

Beverly on Monday. (Dan Pawlowski Photo)

Haverhill took an immediate lead with two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Lindsay Joubert dropped a ball behind second base for a single and Karen McLaughlin followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then Ashley Moore tripled to left to score Joubert and McLaughlin to make it 2-0 before a fly out to left ended the inning.

Wakefield was able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Julia Purcell led off with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Katie Pearl. Meagan Gibbons hit a grounder to third baseman Karen McLaughlin who tagged Purcell out trying to advance to third and Gibbons reached on a fielder’s choice. With runners on first and second, Vanessa Kaddaras doubled down the left field line to score Gibbons. Taylor Owen singled in Kaddaras to tie the game at 2-2 before a fly out to center ended the frame.

Wakefield took the lead in the bottom of the second. Nicole Catino drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed over by Alexis Comeau. Jocelyn Healy then dropped a double inside the right field foul line to bring in Comeau to make it 3-2 but Haverhill pitcher Sicily DiDomenico got the next two batters.

Haverhill was able to retake the lead in the top of the third. With one out, Kaylie Hill and Lindsay Joubert had consecutive singles. Karen McLaughlin followed with a double to score Hill and Joubert to put Haverhill up 4-3. Ashley Moore singled in McLaughlin but Wakefield hurler Kayleigh Callanan got the next two batters to end the inning.

Haverhill extended their lead with another run in the fourth inning. Sicily DiDomenico led off and reached on an error, moved to second on a ground out and then took third on a wild pitch. Sarah Cowley drew a walk and then Kaylie Hill grounded to second baseman Gibbons, who attempted to get Cowley at second. Her toss to shortstop Alexis Comeau was late, while DiDomenico scored to make it 6-3. Lindsay Joubert lined out to short and took second on an errant double play attempt but after singling, Karen McLaughlin was thrown out trying to steal second by Wakefield catcher Nicole Catino.

Wakefield picked up another run in the bottom of the inning. Catino drew a one-out walk and after a strikeout, Healy drew a walk. Purcell singled in Catino before a fly ball to center ended the inning.

Haverhill extended their lead in the sixth inning. Sarah Cowley singled with one out and stole second. Kaylie Hill singled to right to put runners at the corners. Lindsay Joubert doubled down the left field line to score Cowley. Karen McLaughlin reached on an error to bring in Hill and Joubert to make it 9-4.

Wakefield made a last run in the bottom of the seventh. Purcell led off with a walk and Pearl was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Kaddaras reached on a fielder’s choice with Purcell being forced at third. A wild pitch advanced the runners and Owen walked to load the bases. Marissa Patti tripled to left to score all three runs and make it 9-7 but a strikeout ended the game.

“We always have that one inning. We get the lead and then we have a bad inning. Then we come back. We’re never out in the lead or hold the lead and add to the lead. That’s what we don’t do. We don’t get the lead, add to the lead (or) hold the lead and that’s hurt us all season long,” added “Coach Q.”
