WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High School field hockey team held their annual banquet recently where they celebrated one of the best seasons in recent memory. The Warriors concluded the regular season with a record of 11-7.

After starting the season with a difficult schedule against strong Middlesex League Liberty Division teams, the Warriors quickly faced an 0-4 start. Wakefield stayed positive and rattled off seven wins in a row to turn their season around. The Warriors finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak and made the Div. 2 North tournament seeded No. 9, their best ranking since 2006.

Wakefield fell 2-1 in the first round to Wayland, a team featuring three boys, but made the Warrior community more proud than can be described.

At the banquet, the team honored the seniors, the first class to play in two tournament games in over a decade: Olivia Cataldo, Annabella Forziati, Erin Heffernan, Hope Melanson and Carestin Stewart.

The Warriors also congratulated team members who were named to the Middlesex League All-Star team: Senior midfielders Melanson and Heffernan and sophomore goalie Abby Boudreau were named as first team All-Stars. Senior forward Forziati was named to the second team.

Melanson and Boudreau were named to the Middlesex League’s All Conference team. Melanson concluded a long and successful field hockey career controlling the midfield for Wakefield. Boudreau, playing field hockey for the first time this year, quickly proved to be the league’s best goalie.

Melanson, Forziati, Heffernan, Boudreau and Stewart were all on the girls’ ice hockey team last year and will prepare for their winter season starting today.

Wakefield also announced captains for the 2020 season. Current captains Forziati, Heffernan and Melanson handed the leadership responsibilities to current juniors Nora Hagopian (right half) and Olivia Fortier (defense/midfield).
