WESTFIELD — The Wakefield High girls’ cross country team had a great day at the State 2A Divisional meet.

The top 15 competitors earn a medal and the top seven teams earn a trip to All States this weekend.

The Warriors placed 4th in a very tight competition.

“They really ran well and showed a lot of grit and mental toughness during the race,” said Wakefield head coach Karen Barrett.

Devon Jellison ran a fantastic race placing 13th and earning a medal, leading Wakefield as their top finisher.

“Devon has worked extremely hard and is a fantastic captain,” said Barrett. “I am really happy for her success.”

Charlotte O’Neil was right behind Jellison with a 15th place finish also earning a well-deserved medal.

“Charlotte always gives it everything she has and I was really proud of her effort,” said Barrett.

Sophomore Lily Sallee was next for the Warriors running a strong race with a great finish. Julia Welch and Lexi Yianacopolus ran their best races of the season finishing out Wakefield’s scoring.

Also competing were Grace Brackett and Maeve Schermerhorn, both running well.

“I am confident that if we tighten up the gap between our number 1 and number 7 next weekend we will have a great showing at All States,” said Barrett. “These girls all put in the work. I was very happy with their effort and attitude this past race. We are looking forward to competing at All States as a team.”
