Boys’ hockey falls to Wilmington; Boys’ hoop starts tonight

The Wakefield High boys’ hockey team fell to Wilmington 5-2 last night in the Div. 2 North Preliminary Round. Wakefield scored both of their goals during a wild second period, one from senior captain Mike Lucey and one from sophomore forward Brendan Vacca. The score was 3-2 Wilmington after two. Wildcat goalie Alex Fitzler shut out the Warriors in the third and Wilmington tallied an empty netter late to seal it. A full story will appear in tomorrow’s paper. Wilmington will move on to play top-seeded Masco tomorrow night in Woburn. 

Boys’ Basketball

The Wakefield High boys’ basketball team opens up the Div. 2 North Tournament tonight, 7 p.m. at the Charbonneau Field House. It will be the third time this season that Wakefield hosts Reading.

The Warriors won the first matchup, 55-47 in the first game of the season on Dec. 11. The Warriors were led in that game by 15 points from Billy O’Keefe, 12 from Ryan Marcus and 11 from Michael O’Keefe.

The second matchup came about two weeks later on Dec. 28 at the Scott DiMella Memorial Tournament back at the Field House. Reading won it this time, 61-55. 

The winner of the Wakefield-Reading clash will get the winner of the No. 5 Gloucester vs. the No. 12 Danvers game which will be played tomorrow night.

Only one game of the D2N tournament has been played as No. 6 North Andover defeated No. 11 Burlington 76-57 last night.
