NORWELL — Members of the Wakefield Memorial High School girls’ outdoor track and field team traveled to Norwell over the weekend to compete in the All-State Meet.

Junior Sammy Seabury broke a school record and took 5th overall in the two mile with a time of 11:07.81. The previous school record in the two mile was 11:10 set by Amy Wallace in 1994.

“Sammy executed this race to perfection,” said head coach Karen Barrett. “I could not be prouder of her. She deserved to break the long standing record.

“She was ranked 12th going into All States, but that didn’t deter her from achieving the goal that we set out for her. At practice on Monday, we ran 400 meters at a record breaking pace to give her the muscle memory for the race. She ran exactly as we practiced and stuck to the plan.”

Seabury practiced 4×400 meters at 83 seconds per lap which would allow her to break 11:10.

“Sammy has so much discipline as a runner,” said Barrett. “That’s what you need to be able to achieve what she did today. Running an 11:07 is the fastest runner I have had in my 24 years of coaching. All the respect to Amy Wallace for holding the record since 1994. I can’t wait to see what Sammy does her senior year. She works so hard and it certainly paid off.”

Junior Bailey McDevitt competed at All-States in the javelin where she got 9th overall with a throw of 102’2”.

McDevitt went from a best of 89 throughout the regular season to a 105 in the State Meet last weekend. That 105 qualified her for All-States.

“She had a fantastic year improving so much,” said Barrett. “She works really hard and I was so happy to see it pay off for her.”

Junior Sophie Brown qualified for All-States in the pole vault with a 9’0” to place 15th.
