WAKEFIELD — A 63-year-old local woman was pronounced dead at the scene after she was struck by a Boston-bound commuter rail train at about 6:15 p.m. yesterday.

According to Wakefield police, the woman was struck between the Albion Street and Broadway crossings. Preliminary indications were that operator error was not involved and all gates and signals appear to have been working properly.

The MBTA Transit Police are handling the investigation.

Just before 9:30 yesterday morning, a caller reported that an arrow had been shot into the wall near the entrance of his North Avenue business. The caller told police that he was not having any issues with anyone and was not aware of any reason that anyone would shoot an arrow at the building.

The Fire Department responded to 16 calls yesterday. Nine were for medical aid.

• Just after 9:30 yesterday morning, a caller reported a strong outside odor of natural gas on Main Street in the vicinity of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenwood. Firefighters detected no dangerous levels of gas. The Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department responded to the scene.

• At about 7:45 last night, a caller from VCA Animal Hospital at 60 Audubon Rd. reported a possible odor of gas. Firefighters eventually traced the source to oil leaking from a hydraulic device used to keep doors from slamming. It was determined that there was no danger and firefighters assisted in venting the odor from the building.

• At about 4 a.m. today, the Fire Department went to Benedetto Circle after a caller reported that a tree limb had come down on wires during the rain storm and was causing sparks. The Light Department was notified and responded.

• In another storm-related incident, firefighters rescued a driver whose car became stranded in a deep puddle on New Salem Street just before 6 a.m. this morning. A towing company was called to pull the vehicle out of the water.
