Spicer, Gourville earn second place finishes

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High wrestling team had two wrestlers place second and several others that placed in the 16th annual Anthony Lisitano Memorial Wrestling Tournament which was held on Saturday at the Charbonneau Field House.

The Warriors finished with 88 points and were tied for ninth with Lynnfield/North Reading. Wakefield’s B team finished 16th overall with 28.5 points.

Methuen won the team title with 238.5 points while Lincoln-Sudbury was second with 171 points.

Jack Spicer, a junior, came in second place in the 113 weight class and senior captain Evan Gourville was the runner up in the 170 weight class.

Spicer pinned both Sonny Nguyen of Malden and Jacob Wengler of Pentucket at 48 seconds and 3:53. Spicer then lost by fall to Lincoln-Sudbury’s Andy Richard at 2:23 for his runner-up placing.

Gourville posted a 3-1 record at 170. Gourville pinned Wakefield team B’s Mike Yirrell at 1:56. The senior then pulled out a 3-1 decision over Methuen’s Will Travers and 2-1 decision over Pentucket’s Devin Young. In the final, Gourville lost by fall to Catholic Memorial’s Josh Betchen at 1:15 to take second.

There were several other Warriors that placed as well.

Senior captain Evan McGuire came in fourth at the 120 weight class with a 3-2 record. McGuire lost a 5-2 decision to Arlington’s Matt Pickett. He then pinned Watertown’s Evan Foun at 2:30. McGuire then scored an 8-2 decision over Lynnfield/North Reading’s Joe Reardon and a 4-3 decision over Pickett in a rematch. McGuire’s final bout was a 7-4 loss to Lincoln-Sudbury’s Mason Ward.

Dan DiMeglio, a junior, placed fifth overall at the 285 weight class. DiMeglio earned his first varsity win against Malden’s Deyshawn Bourcicault by a 5-2 score. Also placing at 285 was Anthony Denham, a junior, who finished sixth.

Tom Hayes, a junior, placed sixth at the 182 weight class. His first varsity win came against Arlington’s Ryan Mathers by fall at 20 seconds.

Ian Dures, a freshman, also earned his first varsity win as he finished sixth at the 195 weight class. Dures defeated Lexington’s Lucas Max.

There were several other Warriors that competed as well, but they did not place.

Aidan Armstrong, a freshman, went 1-2 at 106. At 113, sophomore Chris Alves went 0-2. Also competing at 120, Jake Allen, a junior, went 0-2.

At 126, sophomore Jake Goodchild went 2-2 and freshman Dale Denham went 0-2. At 132, freshman Anthony Tamagini and sophomore Kendall Hiltpold both went 0-2.

Ryan Smith and Kevin Tran, both sophomores, both went 1-2 at 138. Tran earned his first varsity win with a 9-3 decision over Arlington’s Inigo Sanchez.

Matt Murdocca, a junior, competed at 145 and went 1-2. Both Ben Piercy and Bailey Ritter, both juniors, went 0-2 at the 152 weight class.

At 160, Joe Marinaccio, a junior, went 2-2. At 170, Yirrell, a freshman, went 1-2. Yirrell earned his first varsity victory against Watertown’s Juan Morales by a 17-0 tally.

Steve Mercurio, a sophomore, and Derek Dimascio, a freshman, both went 0-2 at 182 and 195.

At 220, Aiden Coleman, a sophomore, posted a 1-2 record.
