WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Townies Summer Baseball Program is just past the halfway point of the 2017 season.

The Townies baseball program has provided Wakefield teens an opportunity to play competitive baseball during the Summer months for over 40 years.

Originally it was one team of high school baseball players given an opportunity to continue their season. Seven years ago, following the disbanding of the Pony League Program, local coaches from the high school and little league programs grew the Townies program to include players from the age of 13-19. Since then, the program has given 55 to 75 teens each year the opportunity to play competitive baseball every summer against local cities and towns.

This would not be possible without the dedication of coaches, parents and players over the years, who have taken time out from their summers to participate in the Townies baseball program, especially during these hot days when there are other options to keep cool.

This year is no exception, as we have a number of new coaches continue to teach the game of baseball as well as sportsmanship and respect to their players. Some coaches played for Townies baseball in their youth and teach the players what it means to represent Wakefield on the diamond.

Over the past seven years we have had the opportunity to have 3 local businesses who have also been very generous over the years to many Wakefield programs: The Dockside, Honey Dew Donuts and the Wakefield Co-Operative Bank.

This year’s program has a 13 and a 14 year old team participating in the Lou Tompkins All-Star Baseball League and a Senior Babe Ruth Team, ages 15-18, that participates in the Middlesex Senior Babe Ruth League. Their seasons are winding down and the boys are playing some good baseball.

If you have not had a chance to catch a game this year and enjoy the game of baseball, try to find the time to even take in a couple of innings, the players really appreciate the support.
