LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield High head coach Christina Serra knew her team faced an uphill challenge, as they had to face Winchester at home in their regular season finale on May 24.
The Division 1 Red and Black, who play in the Middlesex League, ended up winning the game 22-8.
Winchester improved to 15-4 while the Pioneers, who are in Division 4, ended up at 9-10.
Lynnfield hung around early as they actually led 3-2 early on. However, when the rain started to come down, the Red And Black took command outscoring the Pioneers 11-1 to lead by nine at halftime.
“They have a very good team with a Division 1 bound player who was able to control the face-offs,” said Serra. “They have good stick skills so I was very happy that we were able to score eight times on them.”
This game was delayed for about an hour due to officials problems otherwise they may have been able to finish most of the game before the rains came.
Taylor Valiton led the LHS offense with four goals while Maddie Mastrangelo had two goals and one assist. Chloe Considine and Avery Bird had the two other Pioneer goals. The Gromko sisters, Hannah and Chloe, each had one assist.
Pioneer goalie, Casey Flynn, made seven saves to go to 9-10 in net.
Lynnfield ended up ranked 14th in the latest MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The playoff pairings will come out on May 31.
“We are looking forward to playing a home game in the first round,” stated Serra, as her team had to travel over three hours for their first-round playoff game last year.
They lost to host Mount Greylock, 20-8, in the first round last spring. Mount Greylock is less than two miles from the New York state border.
