WAKEFIELD — As Wakefield firefighters helped with a brush fire at Cedar Glen Golf Course off Water Street in Saugus yesterday, the town reminded people to heed warnings issued because of extremely dry conditions.

Brush fires along the North Shore including Saugus, Salem, Middleton and Lynn have created smoky conditions in nearby communities. Wakefield residents and guests may notice a visible haze and the smell of smoke in the air from these fires throughout the week.

The US National Weather Service notes that the combination of recent dry weather and very dry ground in Massachusetts make conditions favorable for wildfire development, so outdoor burning is not recommended. Should you see fire or smell smoke you believe is unrelated to these nearby events call 9-1-1.

Wakefield’s Health and Human Services Departments offers the following air-quality precautions: smoke can irritate the eyes, throat and lungs. Those with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD or allergies are particularly at risk and may wish to limit outdoor activities. Indoors, individuals may wish to limit use of their HVAC systems and keep windows closed and those with asthma or other respiratory issues should ensure they have access to their inhalers and medications at all times. Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 9-1-1.

The Wakefield Fire Department responded to Cedar Glen just after 5 p.m. yesterday and stayed on scene until darkness fell.
