SOUTH CHATHAM -Marion G. (Downie) Lohnes, 87, of Kittys Lane, died Friday, January 6, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Georges Mills, NH.
She was born in Medford on October 31, 1929 the daughter of Harold and Norma (Mood) Downie.
She graduated from Medford High School and lived in North Reading for several years before moving to South Chatham in 1987. For the past three years she spent most of her time in NH.
After graduating from high school Marion worked in the business office at Filene’s Department Store and an insurance company but once married with children she enjoyed being a stay-at-home Mom. She was an active member of the North Reading Congregational Church and then the Chatham Congregational Church. She enjoyed being a member of the Women’s Group in South Chatham. Marion loved to crochet and would make many items for the church fairs. She and her mother would sell their beautiful handmade items at their little section of the fair called Granny’s Corner and would donate the money to the church. The grandchildren, nieces and nephews were all fortunate enough to have blankets crocheted by Marion. She was very active in the Carmel Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star in North Reading and Chatham and held all the officer positions. When her husband retired, she and he took many cruises and trips with friends and family. In her later years, Marion enjoyed taking rides to look at the scenery and particularly enjoyed the overlook at the Chatham Lighthouse.
Her husband of 56 years, Herbert Lohnes, died in 2006. She is survived by two daughters, Wendy and her husband, Scott McKenney of Georges Mills, NH and Judy Petruzzelli of Chelsea; a sister, Mildred Nicolas of Plymouth; six grandchildren, Melanie, Julia, Jamey, Thomas, Nickolas and Adam; and five great grandchildren, Cameron, Sadie, Sarah, Connor and Jayley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she dearly loved.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11 A.M. in the chapel at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Peabody.
