MELROSE — Ever look at an item you’re about to discard and wonder if it can be recycled —or if it can, how? These are the types of questions that Melrose residents often ask the Department of Public Works and the Melrose Recycling Committee (MRC).
DPW and MRC staff will be prepared to answer such questions at the next event in MRC’s summer speaker series, Less Plastic is Fantastic,” on Tuesday, July 11 at the Milano Senior Center.
The event, “Where do I Put This?”, will address the question of what items go where, and in particular will focus on a very vexing question for dedicated and would-be recyclers: Why is some plastic recyclable and why are other types of plastic products not?
The speakers will review the process at JRM, the waste management company that picks up our recycling, and they’ll have some updates on many materials that need to be reused or recycled. Come learn how to make your own recycling efforts, and the city’s, more efficient and effective.
The third and final event in MRC speaker series will take place on August 22. Attendees at “The Second Life of Plastic Bottles” will learn how our green soda bottles and other beverage bottles are recycled. See how recycling cleanly makes this process more effective. The speaker will be Charlie Faulstich, a Melrose resident who works at wTe Corp., a recycler of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic resins.
All events are on Tuesdays, are free and open to all, and will take place at the Milano Senior Center (201 West Foster St.) from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
