Setter helped Melrose get to state finals

MELROSE—After a remarkable senior season for the Div. 2 North champion Melrose High girl’s volleyball team, senior captain Lily Fitzgerald was named Div. 2 Player of the Year by The Boston Globe last week. The accolades continue as Fitzgerald was also named to the MGVCA Div. 2 All-State team as well as awarded the Middlesex League MVP, making Fitzgerald one of the most decorated Lady Raiders ever.

Fitzgerald set a school record for assists in a season with 663 while bringing 24-3 Melrose to a Division 2 state final. The setter finishes her career with 1,832 assists, second in school history behind Brooke Bell (MHS 2013). Fitzgerald is also member of the National Honor Society.
Fitzgerald spoke of the honor in receiving the award. “I’m just so honored to have received that award because there are so many amazing players in Div. 2.”
The setter began her volleyball career in seventh grade and began training in the setter position shortly after. Her coach, Scott Celli, saw her potential early and has benefitted from her efforts since freshmen year. “Lily is an amazing player who made everyone around her better,” he said.
Her volleyball career continues. Fitzgerald will hit the court for the Skidmore College volleyball team next year.
